How to make Grits
The basic instructions for making grits goes as follows:
Servings | Grits | Salt | Water |
1 | 1/4 cup | pinch | 3/4 cup |
2 | 1/2 cup | 1/4 tsp | 1 1/2 cups |
3 | 1 cup | 1/2 tsp | 3 cups |
Soak grits overnight to reduce the cooking time the next day. Otherwise, place Grits, water, and salt into a pot and cook on low to medium heat; stirring often to prevent sticking. Cook for 20-25 minutes or until the consistency is creamy. (soaking overnight should reduce the cooking time) Finish the grits with a knob of butter and serve.
Save any leftovers in the fridge then cut and fry in hot oil until golden brown and delicious!
Additional options:
A popular addition is to add cheese to grits at the end. Suggestions are Gouda and Cheddar. Diced Jalapeños are also popular. The addition of garlic can turn grits into a savory meal that goes well with Shrimp.
